The Journey Begins!

Hello everyone!

As you know, for tonight's homework, I'd like you to get acquainted with using the blog and begin to think about Kerouac's generation. As such, here are your instructions....

1. Create a "new post" answering the following question- What images come to mind when you hear the words Beat Generation? No wikipedia or online help!

2. Post a comment to this post (meaning the one you are reading right now) stating the name of a famous American street and write a sentence explaining why you feel it deserves acclaim.

Thanks!

When i hear the term "beat generation", i think of people driving around aimlessly. The only thing i know about it is that Jack Kerouac was a beat generation writer (you told us that).

Fifth Avenue because it is known by people all over the world and it represents the commerce and wealth of New York. Whenever anyone thinks of a place to shop, fifth avenue comes to mind. Also tourists make a point out of shopping there.

Wall Street is a pivotal location in the United States, because not only has it defined the economy of the world at times, such as during this period, but also the actions that occur there have influenced politics, the economy, and society as a whole.

Now, a famous street... A famous street would be... Freeway 280 or whatever its called. It deserves praise since it is the highway that always has traffic during after-work hours, meaning that it is necessary for people to get to work and back home.

Lombard (?) Street in San Francisco because it is really dangerous in American history because of its sharp curves, and it's really interesting to look at. Also, it is an important street in America because it is pictured on several postcards created in CA.

A famous american street is the the strip in Las Vegas because of two reasons: one is that the buildings on that street bring in millions of dollars to our economy and two, people all over the world recognize that street. It represents America.

A sort of famous highway is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is a really long road that is wedged in between land protected by the United States Forest Service. It's one of the longest in the United States actually. Our family traveled on that road often while going down to Florida, or coming back up. It's serene at sections of the road, and if you're lucky you can see some animals beside the road.

“Wall Street” now often refers to the Manhattan financial district rather than strictly the street within, but it is still worth mentioning. As the financial capital of the United States - and by natural extension, the entire world - Wall Street is synonymous (or metonymous, rather) with financial interests. With its historic landmarks (including of course, the Charging Bull) and routine hubbub of hectic activity, it is, for better or worse, the ultimate embodiment of capitalism, innovation, and the American spirit.

Hollywood Boulevard is pretty important because it's where the film industry got started, opening the doors to some great entertainment.

Bourbon Street in New Orleans deserves its acclaim because it is where the Mardi Gras festival is mainly celebrated, and it was a focal point in American jazz music history.

Really the first street I can think of is Broadway. It deserves much acclaim for its theaters, which keep the arts alive in New York. People from all around the world travel to this city to see Broadway shows, and so it also contains a large and incredibly diverse concentration of people. Besides being a center for culture and the arts, it is also an enormous source of revenue for the city of New York. For example, when the Stagehands went on strike, the city lost an incredible amount of money. You could even go as far as to call the event "crippling" to the city's economy.

Hmm...I would probably say Wall Street and Broadway in the city. Wall Street because it has very much to do with the economy and effects it greatly. Broadway because it cuts through most of the city and just everything is there.
