"beat generation"

I'm not sure what the beat generation is but my guess is that it was a time in American history when music was highly associated with society. Also, because I know the author was from the beat generation and he was high when he wrote On the Road, maybe people were commonly involved with drugs in this generation - thats a big assumption.
