Hello everyone....As I was reading tonight's assignment, I noticed that there was a lot of ridicule toward Dean by almost all of the people he knew. Camille kicked him out, and later all of his friends treated him awfully. There are obviously some things that Dean does that does not appeal to anybody that he is involved with, except Sal. It is even mentioned several times, especially in chapter 4. Do you think that Dean will do something detrimental to Sal's future? Will it affect any relationships in the book?

hello clayton...i do think that the way they show everyone but Sal ridiculing Dean could foreshadow something bad happrning. They've come so close to losing their friendship and screwing each other's lives over that i think something's gonna happen.
goodbye clayton
Sirs,
I haven't read all of the reading tonight, but I definitely expect that Dean will adversely hurt Sal in some way or another. Most likely, Dean will get Sal - who is definitely too lenient and forgiving with Dean- caught up in the middle of the mess of his relationships with Marylou and Camille.
I also think that Dean is absolutely deserving of the ridicule he deserves. Clearly, he's making pretty bad decisions (like selling pressure cookers - what is that?).
I'm going to take a nap now. Hopefully it will snow tomorrow.
I think that Dean has a reputation for using people only when it is beneficial to him. He doesn't care about anyone except for himself, and he uses people to achieve his goals. I think that Dean is using Sal to get a free ride across the East, because it seems as if Sal is always the one providing Dean with the funds. Once Sal can no longer support Dean, he will definitely abandon him.
I think Sal has a weakness for Dean. He really can't get mad at him or when he does he has a hard time staying mad. What might get him in trouble in the future is that he is always defending Dean and refuses to think badly of him. A perfect example of this is when Galatea is yelling at Dean for hurting Camille and Sal says it's not his fault and continues defending him as Galatea goes on insulting him. This may affect their relationship because Dean may take advantage of Sal's weakness a few too many times and could possibly affect their relationship.
I think that Dean is going to do something that will mess up the relationship between himself and Sal. Whether or not it will be completely his fault, I am not really sure. Sal definitely notes the possibility of this happening several times throughout the reading. Other people notice this possibility also throughout the reading: "'For years now you haven't had any sense of responsibility for anyone. You've done so many awful things I don't know what to say to you'" (194). He obviously has had a past where he has gotten into some trouble before, what is to say that it is not going to happen again? I think the possibility is very high for something bad to happen, I am just not really sure when or where this is going to occur. When this thing occurs, it will probably ruin the relationship between Sal and Dean, but it might also ruin the relationship between Sal and anyone from his "group" from the past. No matter what, I think relationships of the characters in the book will be broken, and it will most likely include the one between Sal and Dean.
I most def think that Dean will do something horrible to Sal. After all, this is a journy epic or a story about a journey. Therefore, the main character has to change within their character and have an emotional journey as well as a physical journey. In order for this to occur, something has to happen to Sal which causes Sal to have loss of innocence and opens his eyes to world. Also, Dean has a history of leaving people and causing probelms for people
Exactly as Clark said, this foreshadows the confrontation between the two. I also feel like this is a theme in itself. It shows that you have to be your own individual, for by copying others, you are making yourselves a worse person. This probably also shows a transformation in Dean's and Sal's lives, which have gone smoothly up 'till now
hi guys
i cant remember what it said exactly but early on there was a line that also foreshadowed sal and dean losing their friendship. sal definitely has a soft spot for dean - i guess because theyve been friends for so long - and he rarely stands up for himself; dean consistently takes advantage. it wouldnt surprise me at all though if sal had a burst of confidence and defends himself against one of dean's actions and they lose their friendship
I agree with Charlie. I think that everybody is starting to see Dean for who he really is besides Sal. I think because Sal originally wanted to be like Dean, he struggles with seeing him in a negative light. I think that this will backfire on Sal because i believe that at som point in the book, Sal will trust Dean with Something that everybody tells him not to and Dean will let him down. Ms.Siegel said that friends do some awful things to each other and i think Dean will be the leader of the wrongdoings in the novel.
I pretty much agree with everyone. Basically, since Sal is fascinated by the free, fun lifestyle of Dean, he ignores the flaws. Although Dean makes mistakes, Sal is setting himself up for disappointment.
Yep, I agree as well. I'm not sure how but i think Dean will let Sal down. I think Sal has put a lot of faith in Dean because he admires him so much. He doesn't want to see the flaws so he ignores them, or maybe he notices but doesn't want to admit to himself that he's wrong because the idea of Dean excited him so much. Eventually though, I think Dean will do something more personal to Sal and their friendship may cease to exist.
Hey guys. Reporting for blogging duty. Sorry I missed the apparently epic cat walk today... I really have not been feeling well...
I agree completely with everything that is being said about this foreshadowed confrontation between Sal and Dean. Also, I think what Nikki said is very true, and don't we all do the same thing? We sort of overlook our best friends' faults simply because they are our friends and we like them for who they are. Isn't that kind of the definition of friendship? I think Dean can be described as an unhealthy addiction though. Sal always wants to be around him, but Dean gets him into all sorts of really bad situations. It can't end well.
hey guys, i think that everyone is underestimating dean, and that he will not let sal down again.
I think dean and sal both realized that they both care for each other, like when sal stuck up for dean when everyone was singling him out and yelling at him. This is shown in the following passage, “ it was probably the pivotal point of our friendship when he realized I had actually spent some hours thinking about him and his troubles, and he was trying to place that in his tremendously involved and tormented mental categories. Something clicked in both of us. In me it was suddenly concern for a man who was years younger than I, five years, and whose fate was wound with mine across the passage of years; in him it was a matter that I can ascertain only from what he did afterward." (190). I think after this epiphany like occurrence, they both truly care about each other, and I don’t think dean will do anything to hurt him.
Hey guys, Basically i agree with everyone on the idea of Dean. Sal is oblivious to who Dean is turning into because he loves the idea of him and ignores all the flaws that may be considered of him. Whenever Sal is away from him for the moment he always says he misses Dean. I think this reflects that Sal really cant define a true friend but Dean is the closest he can connect to one.
i actually have the opposite take upon this topic. I think Sal is going to begin taking advantage of Dean, because during chapter 5 and 6, Dean starts to become more sentimental and show his emotions, while Sal starts to get annoyed with him. I think Sal is going to have an epiphany that Dean is not a good friend, because he is either relying on people or using them, and Sal is not a strong enough person to have someone leaning on him; Sal and Dean are very similar in that they both need support and if Dean is using Sal for this support, Sal is going to crack eventually. For example, we start to see a change in Dean after he meets his cousin, but Sal doesn't change the way he reacts towards Dean's actions.
Having finished the book, I now know the result of the two's relationship. But, posting my initial thoughts, I was thinking that Dean's spontaneous thought process and general excitement would have brought Sal to lose most of his other friends, because as they don't want anything to do with Dean, they may eventually distance themselves from Sal as well. And then Sal may get in some unwanted trouble too. As for Dean, he may even go back to jail for something. I was thinking that if everything went for the worst, even Sal and Dean would no longer be friends, and who knows what will happen without one friend to depend on.
